On April 25th, the Anthony Muñoz Foundation hosted their 16th Annual Straight “A” Luncheon at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse. The Straight “A” Luncheon recognizes and awards 18 Tri-State area high school seniors (9 male and 9 female) that best demonstrate our definition of what it means to be a Straight “A” Student – pursuing Academic excellence, accomplishing Athletic Achievement, showing a strong Ambition all while playing an Active role in the community, maintaining a winning Attitude and displaying the ability to overcome Adversity.

All 18 finalists were awarded a $2,000 scholarship to further their education. The overall Straight “A” Students of 2017 were Maya Kien from North College Hill High School and Jyvel Tolbert from Aiken High School. Both finalists received an additional $3,000 scholarship, for a total of $5,000.

Maya Kien is a well-rounded student who has excelled both academically and athletically. Maya has been a part of the North College Hill Women’s Soccer Team and has received one varsity letter. She has maintained a spot on the honor roll throughout high school. Maya will be graduating Top 10% in her class with a GPA of 4.8. Next year, Maya will attend Xavier University.

Jyvel has shown determination and perseverance on and off the field. He managed to maintain a strong 3.66 GPA while being a competitive asset to his Track & Field team. Jyvel will also be recognized as the Valedictorian of Aiken’s 2017 senior class. He will be interning this summer at General Electric and is excited to begin his journey at the Ohio State University in the fall.

All Straight “A” Finalists submitted an essay that explained the adversity that they have had to overcome and how it hasn’t defined who they are today. Check all 18 Finalist stories out on our website.
